From the Southeast Missourian March 19 1932: Death Claims David Statler David Statler, 72 years old, member of one of this district's pioneer families and who spent his entire life in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger Counties, died of paralysis at 1 a.
m. today at Southeast Missouri Hospital. He was brought to the hospital three weeks ago suffering with a fractured hip, sustained in a fall, and Wednesday morning was stricken with paralysis. The body was removed
today to the Craycraft & Miller undertaking establishment at Jackson, where it will remain until 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, when funeral services will be conducted at Trinity Methodist Church near Sedgewickville.
Burial will be in the family cemetery there.Born June 28, 1859, near Sedgewickville on the farm where his father was born and reared, Mr. Statler spent all but 22 years of his life in that vicinity. He later moved to
the old Williams homestead on Williams Creek, seven miles northwest of Cape Girardeau. His father was James Statler and his mother Emeline Seabaugh, also a member of another pioneer family. During his life Mr. Statler
was devoted to Methodist Church, of which he was a member. He was also an ardent prohibitionist and active supporter of the Democratic Party. He was married Jan. 9, 1881, to Miss Emily Limbaugh, who survives him and is
now nearing her 70th year. Of 14 children born to this union 12 are living, two sons having died, one in infancy and the other when he was 17 years old. The nine surviving sons are C. J. Statler of St. Louis, who is
Assistant U. S. District Attorney; Joe Statler of Illmo, Roy Statler of Chicago, Walter, Silas, Paul, Howard Statler of St. Louis, Linus Statler of Chicago and Dennis Statler of near Jackson. The surviving daughters are
Mrs. Henry J. Long of St. Jacobs, Ill., Mrs. Iva Emory of Washington D. C. and Mrs. Clara Holtz of St. Louis. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and a number of Great-grandchildren.
Two surviving brothers are Joe
Statler of near Jackson and Robert Statler of Patton. A sister, Mrs. John Seabaugh, resides at Jackson. Three surviving half brothers are Tom O. Statler of Cape Girardeau, Walker Statler of Jackson and Issac Statler of
Perryville. A half sister, Mrs. Sarah Bollinger, resides near Fredericktown. |

Obituary written by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Smith Limbaugh:A close friend or relative had been on a trip. Upon his return, several of the friends and family had gathered to the David Smith home to talk
to him. A few days later, the one on the trip came down with smallpox. Cornelius knew he had been exposed, however his wife and five children, including a newborn had not. He immediately moved out of the
house and into the barn, to protect his family. When he was sure he had the smallpox, he left and went to the Smith house, as did the others who were getting sick. Since that house had already been exposed,
they would go there to be taken care of and sometimes die and were buried in nearby Trinity Cemetery. He waved good-bye to his family as he walked across the field on his way to the Smith house. He died 7
December 1874. Six others died between 13 November and 9 December. All buried in Trinity. Cornelius James Limbaugh was the son of Catherine Edinger and George Frederick Limbaugh who was the son of Mary Hise
and Henry Limbaugh. |

Mary E's Tombstone needs some explanation. When Cornelius died at age 35 of smallpox Mary was only 31 years old
with six children. She hired Dean B. Hill as her farmhand and three years later they married.When she died, 41 years later, Hill followed her wishes and had her buried next to her first
husband with the inscription: Mary E Limbaugh wife of D. B. Hill. At the bottom of the stone is the name Hill. |

1903. Josephine and James were married April 17, 1881. James P. was born Sept. 9, 1859 and Josephine was born Jan. 15, 1863.
